Brewbot (www.brewbot.io) is a Belfast startup that invented and developed Brewbot, a robot that brews beer, controlled and monitored using a smartphone app. Since embarking on their journey in 2013, the team has been committed to three basic values: thoughtful design, exceptional beer quality and a continuous pursuit of making brewing easy to anyone.
Working on the hardware team with a limited budget. I've produced and developed design concepts, fabricate prototypes, test and validate, and bring them through to production.
The Modern Maker Podcast set a challenge to see what their listeners could come up with, using two 8 foot lengths of 2x4 (or 4x2).. This is my submission..
At Hillstown Brewery, I built a bar and light fitting for their Tap-room.. I had a very low budget for materials and had to be resourceful using materials that I found on the farm.. I used corrugated roofing to clad the bar and I used old pallets for the light fitting.. To break up the bare look of the front of the bar I mounted a stencil (with the brewery logo) that was cut out of aluminium. I have since back lit it with led strips to make the logo more prononced.
Some of the other projects I've played about with using wood..
A Tree Top Adventure Course designed and built for Kids to safely explore the Treescape at The Jungle NI.. The Course consisted of 20 elements (obstacles) to challenge the Kids as they made their way through.. We built it using Rope Access and Rigging techniques
The Inbred Horror House is one of the attractions at the Jungle NI's Fright Night event.. We started out with old unused farm buildings and transformed it into a creepy deranged home.. Customers made their way through 7 different rooms each more disturbing than the previous, meeting the 'creatures that lived their as they go..
We gutted the building, created new doorways, 'actor runs', built props and set, added sound and lighting, emergency exits, installed safety/emergency lighting to make sure that the attraction would terrify the customers but was also safe.
Here are a few examples of some of the props that I've made for an event called Fright Night at the Jungle NI..
I made this small portable BBQ/Grill Out of an old gas cylinder.. click the video to check it out..
I've built a home brew system for brewing beer.. It's controlled by a Raspberry Pi that allows me to read temperature sensors in the vessels, and to turn on elements, a pump and open/close motorised valves..
I've designed it so that the vessels are on top of each other, to save space and to allow it to gravity feed.. The HLT (Hot Liquor Tank) is on top with a 2kW element for heating the water.. The HLT feeds into the Mash Tun and then lauters into the Boil Kettle at the bottom where there is another 2kW heater.. A 12 volt pump on the bottom of the Boil Kettle pumps the hot wort (after the boil) through the heat exchanger to cool it before and into a fermentation vessel.
I made this chair for my home.. I liked the idea of having the frame as 1 continuous piece of steel that starts on the floor and wraps around to form the base, "legs", arms and seat of the chair..
At Hillstown Brewery I designed and fabricated this sack holder to allow 1 person to efficiently use the mill for crushing malt and filling sacks. Previously, 2 people were needed to use the mill. 1 person loading the mill, and 1 person to hold the sacks open and to stop them from falling over. Check the video to see how it operates.
I had limited tools and materials to fabricate with at the brewery. I had a stick welder, a 4" grinder and a drill.. The materials I had were 40x40x2.5mm square tubing, 1" steel pipe and some 12mm plywood. It took 2 days from designing the concept, to having the working unit..
Some other projects I've done including a Welding Cart, Sheet metal Brake, BBQ Box
A Massive Chair.. Clock Tower restoration of University of Auckland
